                  7 Methods to Understand the User in Web Design

The purpose of any website creation is to interact with online customers easily. The website user interface is the core to keep the customers attached to the website. A dull and intermittent web design loses its business brand value. People are scared to make any purchase from such websites.

UX research methods and website design techniques are the two most important things to consider before designing a useful product that is easy to use and gives pleasure to engage. It basically focuses on enhancing the user research methods while interacting with products on the website.

7 Methods to Understand the User in Web Design are mentioned below:

  1. Reduce Page Loading Time:
    Speed matters in the fast-paced modern world to run the business efficiently. Web page loading time is the first thing that draws attention, not noticeable if works quickly but will definitely get backlash if customer stuck on loading the page. The statistics say the longer the duration to load a web page, the higher will be the bounce rate of the website. A higher bounce rate tells the search engine that the website is not serving quality content to the user and your website ranking on SERP slips down. Search engines prioritize fast-loading websites over slow loading. Very small thing but matters a lot in terms of business because it results in losing potential customers.

    A survey concludes that a page loading within two seconds has an average bounce rate of 9%, while pages taking less than five seconds to load show a 38% bounce rate. Every second is of huge importance on performance results. A web page that opens in a single second makes users happy, stress-free, and likely to visit again and again.

2.      The title and content show connection:
The content briefly described under the title of the headline should complement each other. Whether it’s a blog page or an e-commerce store, the headline should not deceive the visitor. Any visitor clicks on the URL by reading the title only and after visiting the website if the content does not fulfil what the title claims, then the visitor will check out and switch to your competitor’s.

Improper placement of title and description may mislead the user. In an e-commerce store, product specification mentions dress and the image shows pants, shirt with a belt. The visitor may think that everything shown on the image is on sale. The description with images should be very clear what is for sale and what is for representation purposes only. Such unclear descriptions evoke confusion and trust issues.

3.      Visitors like scrolling down web pages:
It’s important to understand the behaviour of a visitor if we discuss about UX research methods, Any visitor who visits the website for the first time doesn’t sit back and read the stuff, they just keep on scrolling the page and switching to other pages, and in that process, if something valuable strikes then he stops and looks at it. It is observed that on the mobile web page, more than 80% of users scroll down the full website within 10 seconds. It is advisable to make your web page scrollable to get a higher conversion rate. There are so many techniques you can do to make your visitors keep scrolling, I have mentioned a few:
* Place a valuable and attractive piece of content at the top of the page; give them a    reason to scroll more.
* Add high-resolution images, videos, infographics, and call-to-action copy.
* Include call-to-action buttons somewhere at the bottom.
* Remind your visitor, it's not over yet using an arrow or simple text instruction to “scroll down”.
* Include jump-to-option or provide a different URL for each segment of the page.
* Use moving animations and creative interaction stuff in the background.

4.      Make the best use of call-to-action:
Now, it’s a time to discuss about most important user research methodology i.e. CTA. A call-to-action is an effort on the website that tells a user to take a specific action. A CTA is a make-or-break element in the website. It directly impacts the conversion rate. A call-to-action can be created in the form of a text hyperlink, button, or just plain text with no link. Some typical examples of CTA are “subscribe now”, “download now”, “buy now” and you can modify according to the product and services. Always use your own creativity considering the type of business and brand you are associated with.

Always keep them short and strong, create a perfect one combining a verb “subscribe”, an adverb “now” and adding a subject if required “eBook”. It must create some urgency for the viewer to instantly take an action. It is a good way to get conversions quickly if used properly.

Keep in mind:
* Placement of CTA button.
* Don’t ignore button colors
* Like color, consider and test button shapes
* Text size over button size
* Keep button text short and simple
* Use 1st person speech – speak like customer
* Create sense of Urgency

5.      Use Popups:
Are pop-ups good for a website? It works wonderfully if done right. Most of the websites generally use it to generate engagement on the site. There is no doubt that pop-ups draw attention very quickly and shift users’ focus. Businesses generally use them for capturing leads and increasing sales.

Sometimes you cannot view the main content just because of popups that frustrate the visitor. Even using inappropriate pop-ups can impose penalties on Google. Make sure to read Google’s guidelines to be aware of what not to do while creating one. Visitors get stressed with too many pop-ups coming so often and it has an indirect impact on SEO.
There are commonly used 5 types of pop-ups:
* Click Pop-Ups
* Timed Pop-Ups
* Scroll Pop-Ups
* Entry Pop-Ups
* Exit Pop-Ups

6.      Upload Engaging Video:
Undoubtedly, it comes under one of the most valuable user research methods. Videos are great at bringing user engagement and interaction. Videos are no doubt eye-catching; enough to stop the visitor scrolling don the website. Through videos, the user stays longer than usual. There can be nothing better than videos to explain the business and its products.

Uploading videos on a website are beneficial in terms of bringing huge traffic to the website. It engages the visitors by providing information on products or services. People spend more time on videos than just reading blogs. Search engine likes content in video form; it increases the ranking of the website and ultimately higher conversion rate.
Places to embed videos:
* Explainer Videos on Homepage
* Demo Videos on Product/service Page
* Promos and Personalized Videos on Landing Pages
* Business Culture Video on About and Career Page
* User-intent and How-to Video on Blog Page
* Customer Experience/Reviews on Portfolio Page

  1. Every Page is important:
    Generally, designers put all effort into the homepage, and design other pages thinking of less importance to the business. But the reality is visitor checks every other page of the website when he likes the homepage. So, it is advisable to never drop the standard of creativity for any page of the website, treat all the pages equally. Try to make a pleasant user experience when any visitor comes to the website and switch to other pages also. Each page has its own purpose.

Don’t drop your standard in the form of content, creativity, or just beauty till the last drop of your website. When the homepage is impressive users expect more from other pages, users leave the site when they don’t see what they expect.

So, we saw different methods to understand the user in web design and most importantly understood when to use and which user research methodology during web designing.
